Simply stated, orthodontics is the art and science of straightening teeth and aligning jaws to improve function and aesthetics of the teeth and face.
It is assumed, by many, that orthodontics is performed for "looks" alone. In reality, facial and dental appearances are only the most obvious results obtained by creating a harmonious relationship between the teeth, jaws and face. Correct alignment also provides several important health benefits, described in another section (Benefits of Orthodontics) .
The essence of orthodontics is a treatment result that includes all of the permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth). "Early" orthodontic treatment should be reserved for only that which cannot be done at a later time or is easier to treat "early". This approach will result in patients wearing braces for less time, give a superior result, and will also be less costly.
The best age for a potential patient to see an orthodontist is as soon as a problem is discovered.
